There are so many stories being told about our young students of color, our immigrant students, and our gender non-conforming students at this time. Oral history provides a method of self and community expression on its own terms. In other words, it’s a form of self-determination.

Ethnic Studies Teacher, June Jordan School for Equity
Partnering Voice of Witness (VOW) this year has helped my 8th grade media students become masters at the interview process. By starting with their personal experience, students learned how to ask questions and develop their own narratives. They applied that knowledge to interviewing staff, family, and community members throughout the remainder of the year. They have been continually surprised to learn the stories that surround them. I am grateful for the way VOW breaks down the necessary skills, provides support, and feedback for our students to deepen their connection within our community.
Heather Rothaus
Teacher Librarian, Hoover Middle School
“Through this project I have learned the value of oral history and how it has the power to show us more about different stories and perspectives. Using oral history allows us to connect with different narratives because we look deeper into people’s lives. We see the complexity of every individual and their stories.”
