Lesson Plan: Oral History Found Poem

In this lesson, students will analyze poetry to locate sensory and figurative language around the theme of “home.” Then, students will craft oral history interview questions designed to elicit stories with detailed, sensory details from their narrators. They will then use their oral history interviews as source material for creating a found poem. Students will explore the following questions:

  • What does “home” mean to different people?
  • How can sensory details help tell a story?

Grades: Flexible and adaptable for middle school and high school.

Time Needed: Two class sessions.

Objectives:

  • Students will use sensory details in poetry and discuss how these details contribute to the overall meaning and theme of the poem
  • Students will conduct oral history interviews using questions specifically crafted to elicit stories with vivid sensory detail
