In bringing these stories to light, Six by Ten co-editors Mateo Hoke and Taylor Pendergrass are asking us as teachers and learners to think critically about the use of solitary confinement and mass incarceration in general. We hope that students who have been impacted by the criminal justice system will see their experiences reflected, while students who are encountering these issues for the first time will address the question, “now that I have this information, what am I going to do with it?”
Our free lesson plans for Six By Ten are designed to support teachers and students in deepening their own understanding of the prison system through the power of personal narrative. The curriculum is flexible and inclusive for older middle school, high school, and college students. All of the lessons can be done as a unit, or individually, or teachers can use different parts of several lessons to create their own versions. Each lesson also provides tips and strategies to support English language learners.
