Testimonials

Many organizations, like Voice of Witness, have pushed the field of oral history further with the goal to democratize storytelling, allowing communities to share their stories in their own words, illuminating contemporary issues in a deeply personal and impactful manner. This approach to oral history, which aligns most with my own, challenges harmful stereotypes, showcases the diversity of experiences, and positions those with lived experiences as experts on racial equity issues, fostering a greater understanding and empathy among listeners.

VOW’s longstanding commitment to ethical storytelling has continued to inspire and develop my own practice as a memory worker. All of our cultural institutions have a lot of work to do to create more restorative and ethical storytelling practices, and VOW’s resources and trainings provide practitioners practical and immediate interventions to change our work for the better.

Francesco De Salvatore
Manager & Curator of the Alexandria Oral History Center

“When we consulted with VOW, we started with a bare bones curriculum, with some loose thematic ideas and a few scattered exercises. Through their expertise, we learned to accordion our lessons to a more fully formed classroom plan, adhere to educational standards, and teach important and relevant techniques to ensure a more successful program.”
