In early August, VOW joined No Immigrants No Spice and our vibrant Bay Area community for BBQ Without Borders — an unforgettable day at the Oakland Museum of California filled with delicious bites from immigrant chefs, live performances, and community joy.
This gathering was more than just a summer BBQ — it was a space to honor the impact of immigrants in our communities and a celebration of the stories and flavors that connect us all. Every dollar raised at the event provides direct financial support to East Bay immigrants who are excluded from government relief due to their immigration status.

Amid today’s divisive political climate, building common ground is more important than ever. At the event, VOW and our partner Gems Oral Histories hosted a Story Sharing table, inviting attendees to record and share their stories of food and connection.
Over 100 community members stopped by our table, enthusiastically sharing stories of foods that carry deep personal and cultural significance. One theme stood out: food not only brings people together but also keeps family traditions and cultural memories alive.

Community members who stopped by our table also got an exclusive sneak peek of VOW’s special project, Setting the Table: A Sonic Tablecloth of Food, Community, and Belonging. Through an interactive demo using a spoon on a piece of cloth, people were able to experience firsthand how the touch-activated technology will bring the sonic tablecloth to life.
