VOW Teacher Workshop: Creating Brave Spaces for Oral History
Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016 | 1:00 – 4:30pm
“If you had a meaningful story to share with someone, what would you need to feel safe, to feel brave?”
Creating Brave Spaces for Oral History, led by VOW Education Program Director Cliff Mayotte, begins by exploring this question.
This hands-on workshop for educators in academic and community settings offers a pedagogy that honors listening and resilience and reinforces oral history as a powerful mode of inquiry.
Participants will explore the nuances and complexities of creating and maintaining brave spaces during their oral history projects. through small group discussions, activities, and practicing and analyzing oral history interviews. Participants will also come away with Common Core-aligned curricular resources for bringing oral history and social justice content into the classroom.
From examining oral history through a lens of cultural norms, insider/outsider status, power dynamics, and representation, workshop facilitators will provide participants the tools to address the responsibilities connected to amplifying the unheard voices in their schools and communities.
Cliff will also be tabling throughout the conference. Stop by and say hello!
